While there are potential complications with every surgery, liposuction complications are uncommon and preventable with the right pre and postop instructions.

Loss of feeling in the skin. This lack of sensation usually disappears within a few days and in some extreme cases a few months. 3.Bruising around the area is common and to be expected as the procedure is tramatic to the body. This usually goes away within a few weeks. 4. Infection is the worst and most serious of the complications and must be addressed with proper antibiotics right away. 5. Lumpy or bumpy skin can result from fat that has not been properly removed. Proper tight garments can help lessen this complication as well. If it doesn’t completely help, then further liposuction maybe needed. The use of lidocaine, a common analgesic medication used in the liposuction suregery, can cause it’s own complications; one of which is harm to the liver. Other rare complications are the formation of blood clots, perforation of the bowel and abdominal area, and shock. Shock can result because of the trauma the body goes through after too much fat is removed; which is why it is so important to limit the amount of fat removed at each procedure. If a large amount of fat is going to be removed then it should be done in multiple procedures. LIposuction is on the low end of risk on the surgical ladder, but none the less there are complications. These risks can be minimized with the proper precautions on the patient’s part as well as the surgeon’s part.
